In the later 18th c., proposals were made by the Town Council to build a New Town to the North of the Old Town, on the marshes; a competition was organised, and the entry submitted by the architect James Craig was declared the winner.
This is best studied by using maps in conjunction with photographs, relating the overall design visible at the cartographic scale and the architecture visible at a smaller scale
SCRAN (Scottish Cultural Resources Access Network) is a database of documents on Scottish culture, daily life and history.

1)
It can be browsed through topics, eg. "People", "Places", and "Ideas" among which you will find "New Horizons" or "Powering the Textile Industry"

2) or it can be searched like a database, eg. placing a query such as "James Craig"

http://www.scran.ac.uk
(some parts of the SCRAN website are in open access, others are available by subscription).
Writing "James Craig" in the search box, you will have access to "Craig's gridiron street plan for the New Town", to aerial views of Charlotte Square and of the New Town, illustrating Craig's geometrical design, and to views of houses in Charlotte Square built by Robert Adam. From here, a list of topics in the lower part of the page can give you access to frames on related subjects, such as "architecture and buildings", or "Robert Adam".
The references of the documents are given in detail, eg. belonging to RCHMS (Royal Commission on Historical Monuments of Scotland)
