Leonardo, Newton,
Goethe, then in the 19th c. George Field, Chevreul,
studied the arrangement of colours, which eventually led to
the colour circle in which each primary colour is opposed
to its complementary (the mixture of the other two): yellow
to purple, red to green, blue to orange. |
When adjacent, a primary and
its complementary colour produce striking effects; in Jasper
Johnss painting, the main striped motifs are some in red and
others in green (complementary colours) alternating with whitish
colours, whereas a third motif is in violet alternating with
yellow (this time the complementary colours close together). |
