GEORGIAN GEOMETRICAL TOWN DESIGN

• The Georgians based their views on ancient texts describing ideal cities as planned according to geometrical figures.
  • the major example was Miletos, allegedly built by Hippodamos (5th century BC): see the Grove Dictionary of Art (a university subscription)
• The New Town of Edinburgh (facing illustration) was built on a gridiron plan in the late 18th century (see previous lesson).
