NEW MEDIA AND PAST LANDSCAPES
  • New media and the past

Historically, emerging media have frequently been used to reinterpret the past :

    • the techniques of architectural draughtsmanship were long used to plot views of ancient buildings
    • 19th century spectacles (magic lantern shows...) were frequently reenactments of historical scenes
  • Interactivity and classical landscapes

the interactivity of websites can serve to evoke the multiple configuration of classical landscapes :

    • the option of combining two digital images can be used meant to show the composite nature of an ideal landscape
    • tutorials on scene design are meant to show how these special effects are created: the buildings which appear on the background are placed on transparent 'layers' which can be made visible/invisible. These intermediary backgrounds are the dynamic part of the picture: see our previous lesson on the idea of ground/figure and embedded ground/figure relations.
