A UNIVERSAL VIEW OF THE WORLD: THE PAPER MUSEUM
Such is the 'paper museum' (Museo Cartaceo) of Cassiano dal Pozzo (17th century): a collection of drawings reproducing documents in all fields of learning, from the natural sciences to ancient history, and presenting them in an ordered classication. It is significant that the collection was acquired by George III, at a time when the idea of a 'universal' view of knowledge was prevalent. See the project of the Warburg Institute which relates image-making to the idea of 'classification': each image is part of a set.
